Walking the Plank: Dear Front Office, What's the Goal?
Dear Mr. Nutting, Huntington, and Hurdle:
In order to be a successful organization in any business there is one thing you need, a common goal and vision. The past month of the Pittsburgh Pirates season has me wondering, what is the long term goal and vision of this franchise? Obviously, my expected response from you would be a World Series, however, your actions speak differently.
Ever since the injuries of Taillon, Williams, Burdi, and Kela, the pitching staff has struggled greatly trying to piece together good starts and relief outings. Instead of going out and acquiring a pitcher to help this team, the method to attack this was basically throwing any triple A pitcher into the mix and hoping that it sticks... but it has been a disaster.
If all of these pitchers - Kingham, Davis, Hartlieb, Feliz, Holmes, Neverauskas, and Rodriguez (I am sure I am missing somebody) - are not made for the major leagues, then what in the world is going on at Triple-A? No pitcher that has come up recently has been ready to help this team and there have been so many pitchers thrown into the fire without any success that something has to be wrong with the system. As of right now, Mitch Keller is the only promising pitching prospect in Triple A, which means this team is in trouble.
For the past few years Triple-A Indianapolis has been a very good team and the Pirates are often praised for their minor league system, but why aren't these guys transitioning to the bigs? Even players who do make the MLB do not live up to their full expectations. Huntington has been quoted over the last month saying these young pitchers better step up or change will be made...but NOTHING HAS HAPPENED!! I am so sick of Hurdle and the front office talking a big game to only disappoint on the field. If you have a need, be like the Milwaukee Brewers and 90% of the MLB and FILL IT. Every team has injuries, you just are not equipped to handle them.
If you look ahead a few seasons, the position players coming up from Triple-A like Cole Tucker and Will Craig give some promise, but this team will continue to have horrible middle relief pitching if this is not addressed, and the team will continue to go nowhere.
The past few seasons the front office has been complacent with being mediocre and hovering around .500, but this city deserves more; we are a city of champions. If changes are not made, fans are going to continue to drop off and another generation of Pirate fans will be lost just like the generation that saw the 20 straight losing seasons.
Nutting, Huntington, and Hurdle, I am begging you, do not settle with mediocrity. Either commit to a total rebuild or go all in. I would be 100% ok with winning 60 games in a season if the vision was to tank now and win later. Whatever the Pirates are doing now, I am about sick of it. Time to find a new vision... and maybe new leadership.
Sincerely,
Aaron,TGYK
