Walking the Plank: Trading Deadline Instant Reaction

The much anticipated trading deadline has come and gone, here are my quick instant reactions to the moves the Pirates made!

  1. Jordan Lyles traded to Milwaukee Brewers for AA pitcher Cody Ponce who has had a 3.29 ERA.

    • The fact that the Pirates got anything in return for Lyles, who has been absolutely awful lately, is truly amazing. I would have accepted a nicely cooked salmon in return for Lyles. No matter what Lyles does with the Brewers, the Pirates win this trade because he would not have been back on the team next season.

2. Pirates not accepting anything less than Gavin Lux for Felipe Vazquez from the Dodgers

  • I commend Neal Huntington for standing strong on his stance that he would not give up Vazquez for anything less than the Dodgers #1 prospect. Vazquez is arguably the best closer in the game on a friendly contract with multiple years of control; that is not a guy you give up unless a team absolutely blows you away with an offer. Well done, Neal.

3. Corey Dickerson Traded to the Phillies

  • Dickerson being traded to the Phillies for a player to be named later and cash in the international signing bonus pool ended up being the Pirates only trade on deadline day. Unless the player to be named is a pretty good prospect, I hate this trade. I know it was highly unlikely the Buccos would resign Dickerson in the off-season, but I love the vision of a Marte, Reynolds, and Dickerson outfield of the future. Sadly, that is not the reality we live in with this Pirates ownership, which is an absolute shame. We will miss you, C-Dick.

4. Melky and Liriano Not Being Traded

  • I can not believe that these two were not traded as they could have some good value for teams in contention. I cannot imagine the Pirates would turn down any offers for these guys as they will almost 100% not be on the team next year. So what happened? This is a big head scratcher, and also disappointing and I was hoping for some decent prospect for them. Overall, disappointment.

  1. I thought Liriano was for 2 years?

  2. I prefer to keep Melky and his leadership/experience with our younger players. As for Lirano, I want to see Keller and Waddell in the bigs, but dont think we get for Lirano anyhow.

Now, it is time to cut Kang and leave Cervalli in on the DL and give Tucker, Hayes and Martin time in the bigs.

    1. I would be 100% ok with Kang and Cervelli never playing again
