Lights..Camera..Reaction!: Booksmart

Olivia Wilde's directorial debut film was a great one! The story follows two nerdy seniors on the eve of their high school graduation, as they experience partying for the very first time. So basically the female version of Superbad. Honestly, I loved the story and the acting, it was excellent. But the jokes didn't always land well for me. With that being said, I am rewarding my very first silver star rating...

And to be clear, this is by no means a disapproval for the film. Quite the opposite, as I would recommend anyone to watch this fresh coming of age tale. Comedy is an tough genre, making EVERYONE laugh is a huge challenge. Because we all have different senses of humor. So please don't give me a wedgie for my PERSONAL reaction to Booksmart. Don't forget I'm a fellow dork too...

Time to get down to the Jimmy Business! Like I said before my only negative complaint I have is about the jokes. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal, but it's a comedy so I had to judge it more harshly. However there were still a lot of scenes I really enjoyed! Molly, played by Beanie Feldstein, confronting her bullies only to find out that they are off to promising futures was awesome. It's a truthful angle not commonly shown in movies and television. Although the cast age was not representative of what high school students look like...

Other shenanigans that brought me a chuckle were; Jared (loved his entire character) hosting a solo boat banger, Gigi's magical reappearances, Principal Brown's Ubering gig, and Amy's parents kissing her "special" panda. Also I wanna shoutout Kaitlyn Dever (Amy) for giving an amazing performance! She played her character perfectly, and gave pride to the LGBTQ Community! Major respect...

Another part I loved about the film, was how it wonderfully portrayed Molly and Amy's friendship. They were truly BFF's (I wish I had friends...JK... or am I?)! Some of my favorite scenes with them were; questioning the pizza man strangler, tripping major balls, and their emotional farewell. Saying goodbyes are the absolute worst, and it tugged the crap out of my heart strings! That scene transported me back to my high school/college graduations. I was holding back the tears like...

This was a great movie and an excellent calling card for new director, Olivia Wilde. I saw it on my birthday and it was a delightful treat! So please do yourself a favor, and give it a watch! It was funny, but not enough to deserve my gold star rating. Do you disagree? Please leave your comments or questions below!
