Am I the only person who just realized that a black mirror is the screen of a phone, television, or any new technological device? Only me? Yeah I'm a big dummy, but hey better late than never! Even if it took 5 seasons to realize it. And boy did I love this new season! The episodes were entertaining and thought provoking, but there was this one annoying problem. THERE WERE ONLY 3 EPISODES! And for that reason alone, I award Black Mirror's 5th season with a silver star rating...
Now I understand that they recently released their original movie "Bandersnatch", which probably took an extreme amount of manpower (or womanpower #2019) and effort to create. But I can't take it easy on you Black Mirror, or else you wouldn't get any better! So tough cookies, you'll thank me later (probably not)! Alright from this point forward, I will be entering SPOILER TERRITORY...
Time to get down to the Jimmy Business! My personal ranking of the episodes is; Smithereens > Striking Vipers > Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too. Starting with the best, Smithereens was an authentic Black Mirror episode. At first, it seemed like a crazy man up to no good, but it transformed into something much more special. It was dark/sad, and I genuinely felt sorry for the protagonist. Even if he was a kidnapper! It was devastating to realize the inspiration for his actions, and I agreed with his message...
And if you ever wondered, what it'd be like to hook up with your gaming buddy then Striking Vipers is for you! It offers the dangers of a physical relationship in the virtual reality world. Or in other words, VR PORN! The story follows 2 best friends, who begin to engage in sexual relations while playing their favorite video game. Their addiction is illustrated beautifully, as they just can't quit each other...literally. Because once you experience the best...
Lastly, Rachel Jack and Ashely Too was still a good episode. I just wished it had a dark ending. Usually Black Mirror is notorious for morose endings, but this season only truly had one. I think Miley Cyrus did a fantastic job reprising her role as Hannah Montana - just kidding! But could you imagine? Back to the point, I thought it was an interesting take to show how far the entertainment industry will go to get the big bucks. And how money and power can corrupt anyone, even your family. Plus the swearing robot doll was hilarious too! But maybe Hannah Montana should have kept Billy Ray Cyrus as her manager. Although it's too late now, as he has already moved on...
